Bill Payne of our NMR club came up with this clever idea for making a lineside HO two-color dwarf signal. Bill likes to avoid spending money if he can figure out an inexpensive way to build something for a model railroad. He found a two-color LED package at Sayal Electronics. Dwarf signal at Utrecht Centraal, Netherlands In some situations or places, such as in tunnels, where there is insufficient room for a post or gantry, signals may be mounted at ground level.

The signal itself consists of two LEDs and thee wires, black = common cathode r = red anode and green = green anode. This is a working model of the GRS Type VA dwarf used on the B&O railroad. It is a build-to-suit item to balance budget and features. Base level signal includes red, yellow and green aspects only, with blanking plates and a top cap. Dwarf signals serve the same purpose as the typical high signals. A very common place to find them is in terminals where there is insufficient room between the tracks to fit a signal mast clear of passing trains.
